UvA is one of the two great public research universities in the city, the other being the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). The University of Amsterdam was established by the municipality in 1632 and later changed its name to the city of Amsterdam. It is the third oldest university in the Netherlands.  It is one of the largest research universities in Europe, with 31,186 students, 4,794 faculty and staff, 1,340 PhD students  and an annual budget of 600 million euros.

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. It is famous for its artistic heritage, exquisite canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, which are the heritage of the city's 17th century golden age. Its museum quarter is home to the Van Gogh Museum, the works of Rembrandt and Vermeer of the Rijksmuseum, and modern art of Stedelijk. Cycling is the key to the character of this city, and there are many bike paths here. May is a good month to visit Amsterdam. The mild climate means you can spend more great outdoor time in Amsterdam’s wonderful squares and parks, such as Dam Square, Vondelpark and the seasonal tulip and bulb park Keukenhof. Although April is usually the peak of bulb blooming, the park is open for most of May and offers plenty of beautiful views of late blooming.
